The concentration of Q10 in the gums has been shown to be lower in people with periodontitis (gum disease) or whenever there is a risk of infected or bleeding gums.

The mouth contains both beneficial and potentially harmful bacteria. The beneficial bacteria typically rely on coenzyme Q10 for their energy provision, while the harmful bacteria typically rely on vitamin K for their energy supply. Supplementation with coenzyme Q10 can alter the balance of oral bacteria in favour of beneficial organisms, while providing a less favourable environment for the bacteria responsible for gum disease. Supplementation is particularly effective in maintaining healthy coenzyme Q10 levels in the tooth pockets of the gums, where bacteria responsible for plaque formation and gum disease may congregate.

Q10 is available from Pharma Nord (Lifestyle's recommended brand) in capsule form or, to target gums specifically, as a toothpaste. Q10 toothpaste is available fluoridated or fluoride free with a fresh spearmint flavour. It contains co-enzyme Q10 and sucrose lactate as active ingredients, the latter of which inhibits the growth of the bacterium Streptococcus mutans - the agent responsible for dental decay. Brushing with Q10 toothpaste twice daily is recommended. For maximum benefit, the mouth should not be rinsed after brushing.
