What is Tea Tree Oil? The narrow-leafed paper bark Tea Tree melaleuca alternifolia is a member of the botanical family, myrtaceae. Plants belonging to this family have oil glands visible as dots in their leaves which, when crushed, release essential oils of varying amounts and constituents. For thousands of years the Bundjalung Aborigines from the north coast of New South Wales, Australia, used Tea Tree as a medicine. The crushed leaves of Tea Tree were inhaled to treat coughs and colds, or were sprinkled on wounds after which a poultice was applied. In addition, Tea Tree leaves were soaked to make an infusion to treat sore throats or skin ailments.
How does Tea Tree Oil work as an anticeptic? Tea Tree Oil is a germicidal essential oil that has been extensively researched with results showing broad spectrum antimicrobial activity – the ability to effectively inhibit or kill micro-organisms. Tea Tree Oil achieves this by damaging the cell wall and membrane of microbes, resulting in the subsequent death of the microbe.
